Webinar: Microplastics – Challenges and Detection Solutions in Food, Consumer Goods, and the Environment

On May 27, 2025, Eurofins ETM successfully hosted a webinar titled “Microplastics – Challenges and Detection Solutions in Food, Consumer Goods, and the Environment,” attracting the attention of experts, businesses, and organizations working in environmental and food safety sectors.

What are Microplastics?

Microplastics are plastic fragments or particles smaller than 5 mm, originating from:

  • Primary sources: intentionally manufactured for use in cosmetics, personal care products, and plastic raw materials.
  • Secondary sources: formed from the breakdown of larger plastic waste such as packaging, clothing, and tires.

Where are Microplastics Found?

  • Environment: present in seawater, rivers, soil, and air.
  • Food: detected in drinking water, seafood, and packaged food.
  • Consumer goods: found in cosmetics, textiles, and plastic packaging.

Health Impacts

Microplastics pose potential health risks:

  • Toxicity from absorbing harmful chemicals.
  • Impact on the circulatory system and internal organs.

Regulatory Framework

  • Europe: Gradual ban on microplastics in cosmetics and single-use products from 2023 to 2035.
  • USA: Enforced the “Microbead-free Waters Act of 2015.”
  • Vietnam: Currently developing and finalizing relevant regulations.

Analytical Methods and Techniques

Eurofins ETM applies international standards and advanced techniques, including:

  • Stereo microscopy
  • µ-FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy)
  • LDIR (Laser Direct Infrared Imaging)

Applicable to various sample types: water, soil, sediment, food, cosmetics, and textiles.
