Quality of Probiotics products

Eurofins has researched and developed many advanced methods, achieving ISO 17025 certification issued by the Bureau of Accreditation (BoA)

Essential products for life

If gastrointestinal disturbances or defecation are caused by poisoning, infection, or other intestinal problems that require specific treatment, it may be due to prolonged use of high doses of antibiotics that can be handled simply with the addition of a number of beneficial bacteria, also known as Probiotics. It will rebalance the intestinal microflora - which has been destroyed by antibiotics - helping to avoid digestive disorders. We can supplement a good amount of bacteria during and after treatment, which helps a lot for the digestive system.

Currently, there are more than 50 strains of microorganisms being used as Probiotics, including some popular strains such as Bacillus subtilis 2335, from Biofarm; Bifidobacterium breve Yakult, from Yakult; Lactobacillus casei Shirota, from Yakult…

According to some studies, Probiotics must achieve more than 106 colony-forming units per gram or milliliter (CFU/g, CFU/mL) of the substrate to be effective. Depending on the product form and how it is used, this dosage can range from 106 to 1010 CFU/g (CFU/mL). Adding an inadequate amount of recommended density can cause you to waste money in vain.

Meeting the criterion of the number of microorganisms is one of the important criteria to evaluate the quality of a product containing Probiotics.

Quality for Probiotics products

There are many strains of Probiotics as well as production methods and product forms, of which the simplest and most common is the direct addition of live microorganisms to the product. However, this method is often difficult in preparing materials and keeping the density of microorganisms in the raw materials to ensure the quality requirements.

Besides, microcapsules are gradually becoming a trend in the production of Probiotics. Microencapsulation protects microorganisms from external influences and inadvertently reduces the ability of microorganisms to disperse in the sample suspension. This brings certain difficulties to analysis or quality control units.

Currently, many methods have been developed to assess the quality of Probiotics. Because of the diverse nature of microorganisms and matrix types, there is no single best method for quantifying the concentration of Probiotics in products. Each method has different strengths and weaknesses.

Some methods can be mentioned from simple to complex such as direct counting in the red blood cell counting chamber, counting on selective agar plates, analysis of mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), sequencing of 16S/23S-genes- 5S RNA Ribosomal; whole genome sequencing (WGS)… Flexible use of many different methods is considered the most optimal choice.
