Why do we need to perform veterinary drug residues and antibiotics testing?
Veterinary drugs are used in animal husbandry to cure and prevent disease as well as to gain weight or reassurance during transport. Veterinary drugs are a complex group of substances with a couple of hundred actives belonging to different chemical classes and therapeutic areas, e.g. antibiotics, antiparasitics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as phenylbutazone, hormones and, beta-agonists.
The misuse or improper use can lead to the development of drug-resistant microorganisms and the veterinary drug residue can go into the human food chain.
Consuming food with a high concentration of antibiotics badly affects health. The antibiotic residues can be transformed into poisonous substances.
In Vietnam, there is a “regulation of maximum limit of veterinary drugs residues in food” which is mentioned in Circular No. 24/2013 / TT-BYT.
