How important is air testing?
Focusing on the most common air testing service, indoor air can truly improve worker’s health and quality of life, providing a healthy community. Indoor air service includes:

- VOC Testing and Radon.
Out of those services, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a large group of chemicals that are found in many products we use to build and maintain our homes, is the most concerning aspect for human safety. Once these chemicals are in our homes, they are released or “off-gas” into the indoor air we breathe. They may or may not be able to be smelled, and smell is not a good indicator of health risk. They can come from paint, vinyl flooring, wood products, cosmetics, fuel… Common examples of VOCs that may be present in our daily lives are benzene, ethylene glycol, formaldehyde, methylene chloride, tetrachloroethylene, toluene, xylene, and 1,3-butadiene.
Air testing criteria
Most air samples will be analyzed by EPA Method TO-15. “TO” stands for “toxic organics.” It is used to measure up to 97 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of the total 189 hazardous air pollutants listed in the Clean Air Act. TO-15 samples are analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Gas chromatography is used to separate VOCs; mass spectrometry is used to measure. TO-15 samples are collected in Summa Canisters.
