Control PFAS in Food

Sidebar Image

Eurofins Sac Ky Hai Dang has successfully deployed a method to analyze 22 PFAS substances by LC/MS/MS with an extremely low detection threshold of 0.3 µg/kg with 24h fast TAT response.

Per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

PFAS is a group of more than 4,500 non-biodegradable active ingredients that have been used in a wide range of consumer and industrial products since the 1940s due to their resistance to grease, oil, water and heat.

PFAS is used in water- and carpet-resistant fabrics and carpets, cleaning products, paints, and fire-fighting foams. Since the 1960s, some PFAS have been approved by the FDA for limited use in cookware, food packaging, and food processing equipment.

The widespread use of PFASs and their ability to persist over time in the environment have resulted in increased pollution levels.

Studies show that PFAS affects human health such as causing cancer, kidney disease, increasing blood cholesterol, affecting the immune system, and causing low birth weight in babies.

PFSA and world regulations

The FDA has begun requiring the phasing out of the use of PFAS compounds in the manufacture of products that come into contact with food. In 2016 the FDA revoked regulations allowing the use of long-chain PFASs (more than 8C) in food packaging. As of November 2016, long-chain PFAS is no longer used in food contact products sold in the United States.

EU, since 2009, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) have been included in the Stockholm Convention to phase out their use. PFOS has been restricted from use in the EU for more than 10 years. July 4, 2020 PFOA is banned from use. Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), salts and related compounds are under consideration for global phasing out. Perfluorinated carboxylic acids (C9-14 PFCA), salts, and their precursors will be restricted for use in the EU from 2/2023.

EFSA has also set a threshold for monitoring and requires food manufacturers to monitor throughout the years 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 with 4 substances: PFOS, PFOA, Perfuorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS). Further investigation of the causes of the contamination should be carried out when the following indicative levels are exceeded:

  PFOS (µg/kg) PFOA (µg/kg) PFNA (µg/kg) PFHxS (µg/kg)
Fruit 0.010 0.010 0.005 0.015
Vegetables (except wild fungi) 0.010 0.010 0.005 0.015
